Cocktails 1931 to 1940

Let’s examine the fourth decade of the 1900’s, a challenging decade for the World and for Cocktails.

The decade was overshadowed by ‘The Great Depression’, a period of severe economic decline and hardship, that although the dates vary in different parts of the world, covered the majority of the 1930’s. Arguably starting in the USA with the stock-market crash of 29 October 1929, some global economies started to improve by the mid 1930’s, however for many, the Great Depression didn’t end until the outbreak of World War Two in 1939.

In addition to the poor economic climate and looming war, the USA was still under Prohibition until the 21st Amendment to the US Constitution was enacted on 5 December 1933, repealing the Volstead Act and the 18th Amendment.

Repeal Day – 5 December 1933 (Library of Congress).

Inventions during the 1930’s included Scotch Tape, the Nylon Toothbrush, the Jet Engine, High Speed Photography, Radar, the Electron Microscope, and Canned Beer.

Perhaps the most influential ‘Cocktail Book’ ever written was released, the 1930 publication of ‘The Savoy Cocktail Book’ by Harry Craddock, with more than 700 recipes collected from his work in both pre-Prohibition USA and then in London, as Head Bartender at the Savoy Hotel from 1926.
